Eloise's Newborn Photography Session in Bunya, Brisbane

Some babies sleep the whole session and some babies have other plans, and Eloise had very much made up her mind about her stance before we'd even started.

Natasha and Jake brought their brand new baby girl in to the studio for her newborn session, and if you're picturing a sleepy little bundle curled up for two hours straight, then maybe skip this blog, because that's not what happened at all, but it was still one of the loveliest sessions I've had in a while.

Eloise was awake for most of it. Like, properly awake, taking it all in, big wide eyes and not phased at all about being the centre of attention.

Most of the session was Eloise wriggling her way toward freedom, one determined foot at a time. She kept working herself loose from the wrap and honestly, it worked in our favour.

Those tiny feet poking out the side became some of my favourite frames from the whole shoot. There's something about a newborn foot escaping a wrap that says more about their personality than a posed shot ever could, and Eloise's said "I'm out of here" pretty clearly.

But the cute bear bonnet was where she drew the line. The second it went on she let us know exactly how she felt about it, and it was something like this:

So we took a little break, she had a little feed and settled into a doze. This was when we got our window, three minutes, maybe four, where the bonnet stayed on and she stayed still.

Eloise has the kind of eyelashes most adults would ask their brow tech about, long and dark and completely unreal on a baby this size, and I managed a close-up while she was still and sleepy enough to hold it.

What I loved about this session is that it didn't go the way sessions "should" go on paper, and it was still exactly right. Some babies want to be part of the action, wide awake and watching everything, and that's just as much their story as a sleepy curled up newborn is for someone else.

My job isn't to force a baby into a pose that suits the shot list. It's to watch what's actually happening in front of me and catch it before it's gone, bonnet drama and all.
