Vanessa Turns One: First Birthday Photos in Brisbane

First birthday photos in Brisbane are all about capturing a personality that has arrived in full force, not just a milestone on a calendar. And that is exactly what happened when Melissa and Mitch brought their daughter Vanessa into my Bunya studio, just days before she turned one.

I met this gorgeous family through Mama's Circle, the mother's group that runs information sessions out at Everton Park. Every family who comes through there gets a complimentary photo shoot with me, and honestly, some of my favourite sessions have started exactly this way. Melissa brought Vanessa in, and I could tell straight away this was going to be a good one.

Meeting Vanessa, Curious, Confident and Ready to Wave

Vanessa was fast asleep in the car on the way over (every parent's small miracle before a session) and she woke up content and ready to go. No settling in required. We got into the shoot pretty quickly, and it was obvious within minutes that this little girl notices everything.

She waved at the camera like she had been doing it her whole life. She is one of those babies who is properly inquisitive, tracking everything going on around her, taking it all in. That energy is gold for a first birthday session because it means I am not chasing a mood. I am just following her lead.

Then Mitch threw her up in the air and she loved it so much I nearly lost her out of the top of my frame. I thought I had left plenty of room. I had not. That is the thing about photographing real joy, it does not always fit neatly inside the lines you planned for, and some of my favourite shots come from exactly that kind of near miss.

The Tricycle Moment

I always love pulling out my rusty old antique tricycle for first birthday sessions, and this one did not disappoint. Vanessa stood up, held onto the handlebars, and gave us the kind of smile that only comes from discovering something brand new and a little bit exciting. It was not a huge dramatic moment. It was just a proper, genuine, one-year-old kind of joy, and that is exactly what makes a photo worth keeping.

Marking the Milestone

With every first birthday session, I bring in my little number letters so we get at least one photo that time stamps exactly how old she is. It sounds like a small thing, but it is the kind of detail that means everything a few years down the track, when you cannot quite remember if she was ten months or thirteen months in that gorgeous jumper.
