Fact: wrangling the whole family into one photo can feel like trying to brush a toddler’s hair during a tantrum.
But when it’s done right: Magic.
After many years capturing family photography in Brisbane, I’ve seen it all. Snotty noses, wild toddlers, dads who’d rather be mowing the lawn.
And guess what? Those sessions often turn out to be the most joy-filled, memory-rich galleries of all.
Whether you're planning a photoshoot for your baby’s first birthday, a multi-generational reunion, or just want to get out from behind the iPhone for once, these tips will help you get beautiful, meaningful family portraits you’ll actually want to hang on your wall.

Family Photography Brisbane Location
Yes, Brisbane has loads of locations like beaches, parks, street art laneways. But remember, public spaces come with stuff.
Like sticky-beak strangers, full-blown toddler meltdowns over sand in their shoes, or curious dogs sniffing your picnic.
That’s why my private indoor/outdoor studio in Ferny Hills is a family favourite.
It’s peaceful, secure, beautifully landscaped, and designed specifically for family photography.
No one’s photobombing you. No one’s judging your snack bribes. And no one’s accidentally going for a swim.
Just you, your crew, and all the space you need to relax and shine.

Bonus Feature: Chickens, If You’re Into That
Yes, you read that right.
If you’re shooting at my Ferny Hills studio and you fancy a bit of farmyard flair, the chooks can make a guest appearance.
They’re surprisingly photogenic, great with kids, and add a quirky little touch to your gallery.
Totally optional, of course. But if your toddler decides the highlight of their session was giving a chook a cuddle, I won’t be the least bit surprised.

Timing is Everything (Especially for little people)
Lighting is a big deal in photography, but so is your toddler’s mood.
While golden hour (that dreamy light just after sunrise or before sunset) is technically the best time to shoot, I’ve got a studio rule: no under 5's after 5.
Overtired toddlers and cameras just don’t mix.
For young families, we shoot in the morning when everyone’s fresh, cheerful, and far less likely to meltdown over a banana cut the wrong way.
But if your kids are well past the nappy-nap zone (or you're doing an adults-only session), that late-afternoon light is (as the influencers say) Chef’s kiss. It’s warm, glowy, and absolutely worth it.

What Should We Wear?
Start with an outfit you feel amazing in, then coordinate the rest of the family around that.
Avoid logos and super busy patterns. And no need to match exactly (this isn’t a denim-and-white-shirts-from-2003 situation). Think coordinated, not cloned.
Neutral tones, soft pastels, and earthy colours always photograph beautifully, and don’t worry, once you’re booked in, I’ll send you my full outfit guide and help you pull it all together. I’m just a photo away if you need a second opinion.
I also reckon it helps to lay everything out the day before. No one needs last-minute outfit chaos on shoot day.

Don’t Pose. Just Play
The best photos aren’t the ones where you’re all standing stiff with your Sunday best smiles.
They’re the ones where you’re snuggling, tickling, giggling, and genuinely enjoying being together.
I’ll gently guide you into flattering light and natural movement, but the goal is for you to forget the camera’s even there.
Trust me: those little glances, soft kisses, and belly laughs are the images that you will feel in your soul.

Snacks, Breaks & Backup Plans
Kids get hangry.
Grown-ups get flustered. Brisbane weather gets unpredictable.
So we roll with it. Bring snacks, water, and anything comforting for the kids. I always build in time for little breaks and if the weather turns, we have backup plans.
The most important thing is keeping things relaxed and fun.

Candid Beats Perfect
Let the kids run. Let grandma get in the frame. Enjoy the moment.
Exhale.
Your photos shouldn’t look like stock images, they should look like your life, in all its messy, magical glory.
That’s what makes them worth keeping forever.

Lastly - Print the Damn Photos!
Once your session is done, don’t let those stunning photos sit in your inbox.
Print them. Frame them. Stick them on the fridge. Give them to grandparents.
Because one day, you’ll blink and your babies will be teenagers and you’ll be so grateful you captured this season, tantrums, cheeky grins and all.
Want help planning your Brisbane family photo session? I’ve got you.
Let’s make it relaxed, meaningful, and fun!
It’s all part of your story.
