4 Things Your Photographer Wishes You Knew Before Your Brisbane Family Photoshoot

I photograph families for a living and I still have a camera roll full of my own kids mid-blink and mid-argument with each other. Photographers are not immune, which is handy, because it means I know exactly how a session feels from your side of the lens.
So if you're wondering how to prepare for a photo session in Brisbane, whether it's a newborn session or a family session, I am here to let you know it is as simple as "wear something soft and comfortable and tell me what you're worried about before the day".
That's the whole job on your end and I'll take care of the rest.
Most of us walk into a session feeling like there's an exam we forgot to study for, and I'm happy to report there is no exam.
Feeds, snacks and the odd meltdown are all part of the day and none of them will wreck your photos.
After years of photographing newborns, babies, bumps, toddlers and big busy families, the same four things come up in almost every session. These are the ones I wish every mum knew before she walked through my door.

1. Your Brisbane Family Photoshoot Is Less About "Being Photographed" and More About Just Being Together
You might walk in feeling like you're about to be put on show, and I get it (I've stood on the other side of the camera and felt exactly the same). But a photo session is less about being photographed and more about being together for a bit, and once you know that the whole thing feels different.
For a newborn session it all about soft cuddles and rocking and you and your partner staring at your brand new human while I quietly get on with it in the background.
For a family session it's more tickles and a wander through the garden and everyone getting a bit silly.
Some of my favourite frames from any session happen between the "official" photos, when someone whispers something to the baby or a big sibling cracks a joke. Those moments only happen when you're relaxed enough to forget about me.
The photos are what's left over from that time together.
When you treat your photo session in Brisbane as a rare slice of time with your people and nothing to organise, you soften and your kids soften and it shows in every frame. You look after the cuddles and I'll look after the camera.

2. Outfits Matter Less Than You Think
Outfits cause more stress than anything else before a session, and they matter far less than you'd expect.
Soft, neutral tones in comfortable fabrics photograph best for both newborn and family sessions. Big logos, neon colours and head-to-toe matching tend to pull the eye away from your faces.
If you're booked in for a newborn session, choose something soft and stretchy that you feel good in and that works for feeding, because you'll be sitting down with bub a fair bit. Skip anything stiff or fiddly (your future self will thank you).
For a family session, pick two or three colours that sit well together and let everyone wear a different shade. Layers and textures like knits, linen and cardigans add depth without looking staged. Matching outfits aren't required and the photos often look better without them.
Bare feet are my favourite option for little ones, especially in the garden, and they save you from wrestling shoes onto a toddler who has other plans.
If you're stuck, message me and I'll help you choose. It's one of my favourite parts of the prep, so there's no need to stress over it on your own.

3. Tell me your worries before the day and I'll plan around them
You're allowed to have a list of worries and I want to hear every item on it. It might be your arms or your tummy or the toddler who refuses to cooperate with anyone, or the fact that you've dodged cameras since your last baby (I've heard them all during a Brisbane family photoshoot and had most of them myself).
Telling me early means I can plan around it. A shy toddler gets a different warm-up to a confident one, and a mum who dislikes her arms gets angles and poses that make her feel great. Partners get nervous too, usually about looking silly, and I'm happy to coach them through it so nobody feels put on the spot.
If you're nervous about your newborn, I'm first aid certified and trained in newborn safety, so ask me anything and I'll walk you through exactly how I handle your baby.
This is also where I'll gently say it: please get in the photos. Your kids will want you in the frame, and the photos of you holding them are the ones they'll reach for years from now. Mums tell me all the time that they have a camera roll full of their kids and hardly a single shot of themselves, and I'd love to fix that for you.

4. Feeds, Meltdowns and Nappy Changes Are Part of Every Photo Session
Babies get hungry and toddlers need snacks and every so often a three-year-old decides the garden is the worst place on earth. All of that is normal and I plan for it.
I allow plenty of time so nobody is watching the clock, and the session runs to the baby's schedule and the kids' moods.
At newborn sessions expect feed breaks, settling time and the occasional surprise wee on a blanket (it happens more often than you'd think and it has never bothered me). If your baby is sleepy when we start, wonderful, and if they're wide awake we work with it. Pack what you'd normally take on a day out.
At family sessions bring water, a snack and a favourite toy for the little ones. A meltdown halfway through is usually a giggle fit ten minutes later.
Please don't apologise for any of it. I'd much rather you feed your hungry baby than push through with a tense mum and a grizzly bub, because that tension shows in photos.
